Longer or shorter, team or solo, indulgent or character building, in a busy modern world perhaps a testing expedition has more value than ever. Even if the iconic sources and peaks have been bagged long ago, there’s always something not many if any have been crazy enough to try before, like a short swim from Island to Castle in the North Sea. While rafting a river in Sumatra or climbing Aconcagua in South America make for the best pipe and slipper stories, it’s sometimes the less glamorous challenges closer to home that provide the hardest life lessons, none more so than taking the Bob Graham Round in the Lake District for granted.
